About

Mark Nicol is Professor of Microbiology at the University of Western Australia. He studied medicine and medical microbiology at the University of the Witwatersrand and completed his PhD in childhood tuberculosis in Cape Town. His research explores the role of the early life microbiome in acute and chronic respiratory illnesses in children. He also has an active research programme involved in the development and evaluation of better diagnostic tests for tuberculosis and pneumonia. He is chairperson of the WHO Advisory Group on Tuberculosis Diagnostics and Laboratory Strengthening, member of the WHO Tuberculosis Diagnostics Guideline Development Group, and serves as a consultant to the World Health Organization Antimicrobial Resistance Division.
