About

Associate Professor Sarah Bernays is an anthropologist at the University of Sydney. She researches how best to support community engagement in infectious disease (HIV and TB) prevention, treatment and care. She concentrates on illuminating and addressing structural conditions which perpetuate inequity and exclusion from health services. Sarah seeks to redress the marginalisation of community expertise in the production of knowledge, e.g. through Community Advisory Boards and lived experience research, to strengthen approaches that can work to improve health outcomes. She leads projects in South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe, as well as in Australia, Vietnam and the Pacific. She is co-Director of Sydney’s Masters of Global Health and Director of Social Sciences at THRU- Zimbabwe.
