About

Hon A/Prof Coussens is an infectious disease immunologist. Her research team is identifying mechanisms and mediators of immune dysregulation that increases tuberculosis (TB) risk to develop improved diagnostic and treatment approaches. Over the last 15yrs she characterized in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro mediators of TB immunopathogenesis, detrimental interactions with HIV-1 & SARS-CoV-2, identified and evaluated novel blood biomarkers of asymptomatic TB, and evaluated immunotherapeutics to prevent and resolve TB. Currently Laboratory Head at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI), she worked in the UK (2008-2012) and South Africa (2012-2018) and maintains an Honorary position at University Cape Town
