A new study proudly funded by the TB CRE seed grant and published in The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific highlights a successful community-based model for managing MDR/RR-TB household contacts in Mongolia. Trained community health workers achieved over 98% screening coverage across 12 months, diagnosing TB in 4.9% of contacts, most of them children.

The study also introduced six months of daily levofloxacin (6Lfx) as preventive treatment for eligible child contacts, with all completing therapy. These findings align with WHO recommendations and VQUIN trial results, offering a scalable approach for TB prevention in high-burden settings.

This model demonstrates how decentralised care can overcome barriers to access and improve outcomes, even during disruptions like COVID-19.
