We’re pleased to share a new article in IJTLD Open titled “Progress and Challenges to TB Elimination in New South Wales, Australia”, co-authored by our Chief Investigator, Professor Ben Marais.

The paper reviews NSW’s efforts to eliminate TB using the WHO framework for low-incidence countries. It highlights strong surveillance, contact tracing, and uptake of shorter MDR-TB treatments, while noting ongoing challenges like:

  • Plateaued TB rates

  • Local transmission in vulnerable groups

  • Low public awareness

  • Migration-related complexities

The authors call for better screening, preventive treatment, and community-led strategies to help achieve Australia’s goal of zero local TB transmission.

Congratulations to Professor Marais and co-authors for this valuable contribution. Click here to read the article.
